SC stays death penalty to Kasab, notice to Maharashtra govt on his plea

#SupremeCourt court notice to Maharashtra govt on a petition filed by Mumbai terror attact accused Ajmal Amir Kasab. Kasab had sent a letter petition to the apex court after which the court appointed Senior Advocate Raju Ramachandran as amicus curiae in the matter.

A bench of Justice Aftab and Justice C K Prasad stayed the death penalty awarded to Kasab. The court also issued notice on the appeal filed by Maharashtra government. Maharashtra government had appealed against the acquittal of Faheem Ansari and another accused in the matter.

While issuing notice, the bench observed that many people think that Kasab doesn't deserve an appeal but it is the requirement of the judicial system.

Matter shall be taken up for final hearing from 31st January 2012.
